Ikea is no longer carrying the Eina bed frame, however they have the Fjelse bed frame. Although you will need to trim off the legs and head board the frame will work.

Update to the Airspring in the Parts List

The Airspring listed in the parts list and plans on plans purchased before Dec. 1 2009, needs to be switched with Part# 81999138. Apparently the manufacturer changed the attachment heads on the original springs we listed. I realize this may have caused a lot of headaches for people and we apologize. We updated the plan as soon as we were notified.

What Customer Service?
I will be upfront and tell you that when I decided to sell these plans online, I had more free time. But like the saying goes “The only constant in life is change.” My free time has evaporated and I can’t answer questions as often as I use to. FAQ: A Dual Twin Moddi?

I have a guest room which I would like to double as an office with a desk. In this guest room, I would like to place two twin beds. Right now, I can buy a twin bed with a second twin that pulls out from under the first bed for a few hundred dollars. I would like to find a way to use that concept, but to incorporate your murphybed concept to move the two twin mattresses out of the way in a Moddi fashion.

I can imagine providing an expandable track, where when the moddi twin bed (containing both mattresses) is opened, the second bed can slide apart from the first bed. However, I could use your input.

FAQ: Metal Studs? Brick?

Hi there,
I’m very excited about the full/double Moddi Bed idea – but I wanted to understand the mounting to the wall first.
I live in a new condo which for all intents and purposes is made like an office building – concrete floors and ceilings, metal studs, drywall. The metal studs are on 24” centers if I remember correctly.
I would assume that the support arms/shocks or whatever is used to diagonally hold the opened bed assembly to the wall would need to be attached to a stud. In my case, a metal stud, on 24” centers.
Do you know if metal studs have enough strength to do this for a horizontally-mounted full/double?
What if I find that I can’t align the bed horizontally on the wall such that I can get both diagonal support arms to square up to metal studs for proper attachment?
I figured you probably have gotten this question before but I could not find it in the FAQs.

Moddi People are dedicated to creating plans that will save a Moddi person a lot of money and designed for the “Beginner Level Do-It-Yourselfer.” A Queen size murphy bed is little more challenging to keep it easy-to-build and low build cost because of the weight. But we’ve been working on it!

Wow, amazing site and plans! I had to buy em just for their graphic
nature alone.

Any thoughts on a free standing version twin size? The only long wall
I have in my studio is concrete - so a bit of an impossible place to
mount one of these. Not to mention the fact that the wall is hardly
square in any plane.

I'll pour over your plans and try and figure out a creative solution,
but please let me know if you've had similar requests.

Hi I am running into a couple of problems and I am hoping you might have a solution or at least a suggestion. First, I am attempting to build the full size bed and the piece labeled cut #7 is not the right size. After putting all the frame pieces together it appears the cut piece #7 is not the right size. It does not allow for the gas shocks to be mounted on the outside of the bed box, but rather putting it on the inside. The other issue we've run into it the gas shocks purchased, after two different sets they appear to be to heavy for this function.

We installed and instead of moving they bent the flat bracket it was mounted to. Is this a shock you've used before or did you suggest a heavier duty one for the larger bed.

I'm a little confused about the legs . Are they necessary? In most of the pictures of the moddi there are no legs which has an appealing look. Is the leg idea submitted by Dave optional,do they stay attached? Actually it wasn't exactly clear to me how they work.

Could you describe the extent of damage to the wall that would be left behind if I were to move out? Also, since there is only one wall where it would fit and not in any position there, what should I do to determine whether it can be properly installed there? Finally, would there be an easy modification for a Queen if it were for an Aerobed air mattress which weighs much less than a standard twin mattress? ~BS

Installation will require up to 10 screw holes into the wall at the studs. We recommend a minimum 3 screws for the cleat and 3 screws for the bed-caddy. The plans call for 5 screws each.

The Twin Moddi would require mounting-wall space of approximately 78” wide x 27” tall and 18” from the floor. When in the up position, the Moddi requires vertical space of of at least 53” and horizontal space from the wall of at least 47” in the down position.

The Full/Double Moddi would require the same mounting wall space as the twin. When in the up position, the Moddi requires vertical space of of at least 53” and horizontal space from the wall of at least 69” in the down position.

What if there are outlets on the wall?
Because standard electric or phone outlets are installed at 15” from the floor to the top of the cover plate, the bed-caddy can still be installed if their is space on either side of the outlets.

Standard Queen size mattress can weigh between 75-95 lbs and a center of gravity further from wall than the twin or full/double. This has been the challenge of creating a Queen Moddi for and affordable price. If an Aero Mattress was used, minor adjustments can be made to the current plans. We believe we will have a Queen Moddi plan perfected using a standard spring mattress this month.

FAQ: A Lack of a Better... Facade

Did you use cork board for the front? If so, is it possible and realistic to switch out what the front looks like? For example, would it work with the parts list and instructions you sell to use wood or melamine or does that involve more durable parts? ~ JM

The Moddi uses the Ikea/Lack table tops for the facade. Lack tops are hollow and weigh 8 lbs each. This makes for a good facade without any finish-carpentry needed and comes in 8 color options. Based on feedback, the Moddi favorite is the birch.

The plans would work with light/strong woods like Poplar, but would increase the price and would require finishing work, sanding, staining, clear coats, etc.

Melamine would work for the bed caddy that is attached to the wall. However if used for the facade would increase the weight, requiring a special order gas spring.

Keep in mind the weight of the mattress effects the easy of lifting the bed to the upward position. The Moddi was designed to accommodate a standard mattress weight between 35-40 lbs.

The Moddi’s bed-caddy allows for mattresses up to 11” thick. When in the upward position, depending on the thickness of your mattress, there is a gap between the bedding and the wall. This allows for decor items to be used.

Cork is used for the leg assembly as a cushion pad.

We’ve been overwhelmed with emails from everyone wondering what happened to the photo gallery of all the Moddis that people have built from all over the world.

Since the popularity of the Moddi has grown significantly, a colleague had told me nightmares of businesses that used photos in their marketing without the proper photo-release and regretted it. Unfortunately, we were unaware that our photo-release was inadequate. So we decided to take the gallery down until we could get the appropriate releases approved.

We consistently incorporate good suggestions into the Moddi murphy bed plans. We recently received a fabulous suggestion that would significantly reduce the cost to build the Full/Double Moddi murphy bed and are incorporating these suggestions in to the plans. We expect to release these plans by October 5th!

We’ve stopped offering the current Full/Double plans until then because, we don’t have the set up to send out updates to everyone that would have purchased the current plans. Fearing a backlash like Apple received when people bought the Nano and the very next day the new Video Nano was released for $50 less, we decided to remove the option until the Oct. 5th.

Regretfully we have not perfected the queen size Moddi murphy bed plans yet, without keeping the build “beginner-diy-level” and the price to build it under $275.00. We hope to have these ready by mid October!

I’ve Been Getting Request for A Complete Moddi Murphy Bed Kit
I often get request for an entire Moddi Murphy Bed Kit. I spent significant time meeting with furniture manufacturers to see if it could be done for an affordable price and it seems it could. I’ve receive estimates as low as $400-$500 to cut and finish all the pieces ready for assembly. But after you add on shipping, it starts to get up there in cost. And frankly after working out the logistics to operate that kind of business, I’m not willing to go there.

But if you brought the plans to your local cabinet maker, this would be something they could do very easily and you would have more options of laminate finishes to choose from. If any of you decide to do it, let me know what price you are quoted.

It Seems that the Leg Assembly is the Least Favorite Part of the Moddi Murphy Bed
Some people love it, others want another way. I’ve been trying to think of a better way to attach the legs with a folding unit like the other murphy beds. But I didn’t want to have to buy any more parts and I wanted to keep it simple to build. I’ve been given a few suggestions, but so far they’re too complicated. Space, Space and More Space
I’m not going to write on the history of the murphy bed, who really cares? Sorry William Murphy. But what I can do is offer you the benefits of the murphy bed over other options, like the the hide-a-way, by outlining at least two advantages and disadvantages. I’ll leave it to you to figure out how the murphy bed stacks up.

Advantage of The Hide-A-Way
1- Space. The hide-a-way does give you space, about half the width of your bed, whichever size you choose.

2- 2 for One. The biggest benefit of a hide-a-way is that you get the sofa and bed for the price of one, sort of, depending on which hide-a-way you choose.

Disadvantage of the Hide-A-Way
1- Space. They don’t really save you a lot of space. Like I mentioned, only about half the size of the bed. This becomes an issue if you want to have a multi-purpose room, like a home office.

2- Space Control. The hide-a-way will typically be the largest furniture piece in the room, forcing you to design your room around it.

Why Did You Use 3 Fender Washers?
I know sometimes when you have the nice people at Home Depot (yes I was being sarcastic) cut your bed-caddy boards, their not always accurate. It’s always better too be to big than too small. The fender washers help buffer the space, if the center board is cut it too big. It also flips up smoother.

Is the Coupling Really Necessary?
Some other Moddi people have left out the coupling when they built their Moddi murphey bed. Theoretically, it should be fine without it. It could be my imagination, but I felt it lifted smoother with the coupling. They’re only 59 cents each. If you’re having trouble finding them at Home Depot, they’re in the plumbing section.

My Home Depot Doesn’t Carry this Gate Latch?
I checked several Home Depots and they all carried this item, but their web site doesn’t. I know Lowes carries it also. But if your still not having any luck, I found them online by searching “Stanley Vinyl Gate Latch.” They had them in black and white on Amazon, but I prefer the aluminum finish.

Who are you?
I’m still getting a lot of emails from people wondering if I work for Ikea or I’m some big corporation because my web site looks so corporate. I use to be a designer back in the day, so guess that’s why my site looks pretty good. Now I consult for corporations, a lot of boring stuff, so I do creative projects to keep my right brain satisfied.

I’m also a big Ikea fan. I like the simplicity of their products, but more so the fact that their products are affordable.

Using Cork Tiles
My original Moddi Murphy Bed design didn’t use a bed caddy as you can see in the photo. I’ve just been too lazy to re-photograph it. But I used cork tile on the wall to give it a warmer feel when the Moddi is down. And it left an area for my son to personalize. Using the cork tiles still work on and above the bed caddy.

Will the Moddi Murphy Bed Work Without the Sultan Lade Bed Boards?
Yes. I tried it and it seems to hold up fine, but I was worried that over time the bed boards would sag. Another Moddi person told me they increased the amount of screws they used to attached the bed boards instead of using the Lade bed boards. This would save $20 off the budget. For you Dire Straits fans, I do realize using the “The Sultan of Swing” title dates me.

How easy is it supposed to feel when flipping the bed up?
My guess is that flipping the bed up is about the same as lifting 15-20 pounds. The hydraulic dampers don’t counter-weigh the entire weight. The other murphy beds that claim that you can lift theirs with one finger depends on the weight of your mattress. If you happen to be using a really cheap light mattress, the Moddi Murphy Bed can be lifted with one finger too.

I did find a guy that designed a murphy bed using an electric truck-wench. I thought that was pretty cool. But a a two-way truck wench was going to cost over $250.
