Hello, my name is Melia Paguirigan. I am currently a junior attending Tacoma School of the Arts (TSOTA). During my freshmen year at Olympia High School, I auditioned, composed a portfolio and interviewed, for TSOTA. Fortunately I was accepted. Although my school days are longer with a three hour commute each day, I believe that this school is the most beneficial for my education and future. TSOTA has already helped me grow as an artist, student, and community member.
Every year, TSOTA organizes a service and study tour to help the disadvantaged around the world. Only a limited amount of juniors and seniors are accepted. I auditioned for a trip and through hard work, I was one of a few students accepted to attend a trip to Cambodia and Laos (It was originally to Nepal, however a travel warning was issued for all US travelers).
In Cambodia and Laos, we will be staying with the Wildlife Conservation Society’s eco-tourism project in Nam Et-Phu Loei. We will travel to Viengthong, Laos on the edge of the Nam Et-Phu Loei National Protected Area where we will provide English lessons, assist with other educational improvements – namely the library, and participate in cultural exchanges with the primarily Blue Hmong minority students. I believe this experience will help me grow as a person and will allow me to do my part in improving the world.
Another important task for the students accepted, is to raise the finances themselves for the trip. Fortunately I was able to work full-time at a nanny job for the past summer! And on the weekends I worked at fundraising jobs. However that only got me two thirds of the way, so I am also seeking sponsors and donations. Now, with the help of Moddi Day People and Easy Cut Pop-up, I can now accept sponsorships and donations online. So, for every donation in increments of $10, I will hand make you a Kirigami pop-up card of your choice! But any amount will be greatly appreciated. Plus, 100% of your donations will go toward funding the TSOTA service and study tour.
Finally in the words of Maya Angelou, “If you find it in your heart to care for somebody else, you will have succeeded.” Thank you for your support.
Thank you,
Melia Paguirigan
